Toasty Col --> instructions for all sizes!

Hi! Today I am bringing you a free pattern for a turtleneck cowl (?) At least I think that would describe what this is. I called it Toasty Col, because col is the Dutch word for turtleneck, and I always like to combine English with my Dutch background :) I was inspired by my mum who made something like this (Thanks mam!) When I saw it, I thought it would be perfect to make for homeless people (because brrrrr it's cold already!). I made this set below and I think this will keep their  neck and chest nice and toasty. I decided to use a simple stitch to keep it accessible for people with all different kinds of skill levels. 

Let's begin! 

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. 

Yarn: So crafty Aran from Aldi. You can use any yarn you like! I'll give you instructions to adjust sizes! 

 

Hook used: 5.5 MM (or hook size appropriate to the yarn you are using) 

CH = Chain

SS = SlipStitch

DC = DC

HDC = Half Double Crochet

FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet

BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet

CH 4, SS in first CH to form a ring.

1. CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), make 2 DC in the ring, CH 2 , Make 3 DC's in ring ( 3 DC - 2 CH - 3DC)

2. CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), make one more DC in the same first stitch, make on DC in each of the next DC's until you reach the CH 2 space, in the CH 2 SP make [2 DC-CH 2-2 DC] , make one DC in each of the next DC's apart from the last stitch that is left. Make 2 DC's in the last one. 

I have tried to make a chart to make it easier to visualise. I hope it helps. 

Repeat row 2 until the piece is big enough to fit around the head by making the two top corners of the triangle meet. I hope the illustration below, shows what I mean with this. If this is your scarf, it needs to be big enough to make point 1 and point 2 meet when you put it around your head. This is the part that will go over your head when the piece is finished, that's why we check this. Once the piece is big enough, connect point 1 and two together by making a SS. From now one we are going to work around. 

Turtleneck part

1. In this first round, you are working in the side of the DC's of the long side of the triangle.CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC), make another HDC around the DC, make 2 HDC's around each DC. 

SS to the first CH 2 you made. You should have an even number of stitches now. 

2. CH 1 (doesn't count as stitch)* Make a FPDC around the first stitch, make a BPDC around the next one. This will create this nice ribbly(?) effect. Repeat from * all the way around. You should end with a BPDC and SS to the first FPDC made. 

Repeat Row 2 until the part is long enough to fold it down (as you can see on the first picture) and you are happy with it.  The reason why I can't give you a specific amount of rows is because it all depends on the yarn you use and the size you are making. 

Once you are happy with this part, finish off and work away loose ends.
